preparations for the big debate and cnbc's own john harwood joins us live with the details. good evening, john. >> good evening, larry. two hours from that debate we've gotten a reminder in the last 24 hours with a slew of polls of how high the stakes are in this debate. we forget sometimes because we talk about how mitt romney is down in the race but he's still got a chance. only down 3 points nationally in the journal/nbc poll. in key swing points he's pulling even in florida, down 1, closer in virginia, down 2, he's still down by 8 percentage points in our poll in the state of ohio, which is a problem for this reason. look at the map of swing states. if you look at the ones where mitt romney is running within 4 points of president obama, places like florida, virginia, iowa, missouri where he's ahead, north carolina where he's even or ahead, you add all those to the solid states for mitt montana and the leaning states for mitt romney, he's still only at 263 electorate votes. he needs to bring ohio or other swe swing state, nevada, new hampshire. he's got an unparallel opportunity tonight to
the deal with john boehner. that's what the woodward book is all about. in other words, this is something independents love. i say clinton democrats are going to go for romney because romney knows how to make a deal by crossing the aisle and obama can't do it. >> here's where i agree with you. i think the governor of massachusetts showed up last night. not the guy who's been running for president for the last 18 months. he pivoted to the middle for the first time really and he pivoted hard. that was his best. >> was that bad? >> i think it's good for the romney campaign. >> he outfoxed the president. >> is it authentic and genuine is the question an does he have the meat to back it up? he was very specific on what he wants to repeal. he wants to repeal obama care. >> right. >> he wants to repeal cap-and-trade, dodd frank. he was very vague on what he wants to do. he didn't have a plan at all as to how he's going to pay for any of it. >> jennifer just told you all the things he said on the debate last night. the whole debate was spent attacking mitt romney's agenda which is a great place t
, same sex action, will the john roberts supreme court continue to reshape the country in a liberal or conservative direction? that's what we need to know. 36 days remaining until the election, sometime for some tough love on tax policies. paul ryan appeared on fox news sunday to talk taxes. i thought ryan did rather well, take a listen. >> our pro growth tax reform, it cuts taxes by 20%, higher take home for the mid class, that right there creates about 7 million jobs. it's not what deductions are in the tax code, but it's who gets them. and don't forget that the higher income people will have a disproportionate amount of the loopholes that they use. >> for somebody who didn't cut taxes in his convention speech in tampa--when mr. ryan was asked to give the math on the tax cuts, here's what he spochbtded. >> i don't have the -- it would take me too long to go through all of the math. >> all right, so why not use some specific math examples. let's go back to the kudlow caucus, we have good friend david costa and jim patakokus i want to go to you first. if someone asked me the numbers
